Honest, real, and courageousSeptember 3, 2010

Jan Fishler's book, Searching for Jane, Finding Myself, is truly one of a kind. With brutal honesty, she explains how it feels to "just know" you are connected to others. But instead of just wondering as some people do, she does some incredible sleuthing to track down not just her birth mother, but a raft of siblings. While doing this, she has to fight her own demons. This is a real success story in every sense of the word, and the author tells it without pulling any punches and with a bravery that is admirable. This is a true mystery with characters that feel real...because they are. I highly recommend Searching for Jane.

I found this book to be engaging and honest. It's packed with observations that adoptees will find insightful and encouraging. For parents of adopted children, some may find it difficult to read, but for those open to learning about the inner dialogue of an adoptee, Fishler's book offers guidance and empathy.

 An Adoptee's JourneyAugust 28, 2010
This review is from: Searching for Jane, Finding Myself (Paperback)

This books describes the author's anguish at being given up by her birth mother, and her subsequent life journey as she attempts to resolve the myriad issues which arose from her feeling of abandonment.

Fascinating, and easy to read, the book gives one deep insight into the adoptee's pain, but doesn't dwell on the negative. She moves forward with strength and purpose; indeed, with so much action that at points the reader will be in suspense, awaiting the next enthralling chapter.

I think that any adopted child would find this account inspirational, supportive, and informative.

I was very impressed with how the author handled the subject of adoption. It is a difficult task to uncover one's real identity, and Jan did a remarkable job of uncovering her past. She wrote the memoir with passion and devotion to her new found family as well as her adopted family and own family.

 I couldn't put it down!August 26, 2010
This review is from: Searching for Jane, Finding Myself (Paperback)
This is a fascinating memoir, rich in detail of the author's life with many tips on finding birth family for an adoptee. As a former social worker who placed quite a few children in adoptive homes, it closed the loop for me. I have shared the story told with friends and family, and encouraged them to buy their own copy.

 Whoever you areAugust 26, 2010
This review is from: Searching for Jane, Finding Myself (Paperback)
There are many sides to the adoption issue, many roles to play. Wherever you are in the adoption picture, Searching for Jane, Finding Myself, is a compassionate, fascinating journey as an ingeniously resourceful daughter works every angle to discover and connect with her birth family. It isn't the warm, gushy fairy tale of popular magazines, complete with tearful, Opra-style reunions with the birth mother. This book is more real than that and more touching. I am the adoptive mother of a daughter who joined our family when she was ten and Searching for Jane helped me connect with the brokenness and loss that my daughter must feel. It's a page turner that will turn a key in your thinking about adoption.

Fishler says her tale might begin the healing process for some while for others, it may complete it.

Her brutally honest account of her journey that led to buried secrets — and a shocking number of unknown siblings — is a gripping tale.
“I couldn’t put the book down,” says 65-year-old Lee Schlenker, who was also adopted at birth. “I truly felt some of the pain she experienced on her search for the truth. It brought tears to my eyes and her reunion with her biological brothers and sisters – it was very uplifting.”  --Lee Schlenker
